One year ago I bought an iPhone 4s phone, and since then I never shot a picture with the default camera: it was already a couple of years that I was completely in love with Hipstamatic, but with this new phone and its powerful camera using it became even funnier. This post is the first of a series, with random candid shots: a sort of visual diary started in Novermber 2011.

A short trip in southern Bavaria, trying to understand who King Ludwig really was, and why he is still so loved by Bavarians. We found beautiful landscapes, kitsch castles, and a lot of cows. But at the end we understood that he is still so loved because he never waged war against anyone.

Ludwig is sometimes also called “Mad King Ludwig”, though the accuracy of that label has been disputed. His younger brother, Otto, was considered insane, thus the claim of hereditary madness was convenient. Because Ludwig was deposed on grounds of mental incapacity without any medical examination, questions about the medical “diagnosis” remain controversial. Adding to the controversy are the mysterious circumstances under which he died. King Ludwig and the doctor assigned to him in captivity at Castle Berg on Lake Starnberg were both found dead in the lake in waist-high water, the doctor with unexplained injuries to the head and shoulders, the morning after the day Ludwig was deposed. One of Ludwig’s most quoted sayings was “I wish to remain an eternal enigma to myself and to others.” (Wikipedia)

If you’re curious and brave, try to watch Luchino Visconti‘s Ludwig: historians say that it’s the best movie about King Ludwig’s life.
