Sandro

Sandro Pertini was one of the most respected figures of modern Italian democracy.

A committed socialist and anti-fascist, he spent years in prison and exile under the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini. During World War II he became an important leader in the Italian Resistance, fighting as a partisan against Nazi-Fascist forces. On 25 April 1945, speaking on behalf of the National Liberation Committee for Northern Italy, he helped proclaim the general insurrection that led to the liberation of northern Italy. Decades later, he served as President of the Italy from 1978 to 1985, becoming widely admired for his moral authority, his defense of democratic values, and his close connection with ordinary citizens.
