Bettino
For many Italians, Bettino Craxi remains associated with the corruption scandals that shook the Italian Republic in the late twentieth century. For others, however, he is remembered for the stance he took during the Sigonella Crisis (1985), when Italian forces blocked an attempt by U.S. special forces to seize, on Italian soil, a group of Palestinians accused of terrorism after the hijacking of the Achille Lauro.
Craxi died in exile in January 2000 in Hammamet, Tunisia, where he had taken refuge to avoid the judicial investigations into political corruption in Italy known as Mani Pulite.
